ABSTRACT—In the extrusion industry the most widely used alloys within the 6xxx series
are AA6060 and AA6063. The performance of the extrusion process and the properties of the
final product depend on the iron (Fe), silicon (Si), magnesium (Mg), and manganese (Mn)
contents of the alloys. In this paper the different contents of Mg2Si, excess Si or Mg, and
AlFeSi(Mn) components on the quality of the structure of the cast, and of the subsequent
thermo-mechanical processes are discussed. The results of trials made in the extrusion plant
of Aluar División Elaborados using billets from the Aluar primary smelter in Puerto Madryn
are presented. AA6060 and AA6063 alloy billets of different element composition have been
extruded. Press performance and characterization of the mechanical properties of the extruded
profiles are presented. It is hoped this will assist the extruder in the choice of the most
appropriate chemical compositions of the billet to be used.
