ABSTRACT—The extrusion press is the conversion point of the extrusion press. Extruded profile
downstream of the extrusion press has high “added value” and maximizing yield is vital. The use
of two-piece billets in a “cut-to-length” arrangement after heating provides better ingot utilization
than precut billets. The historic challenge of two-piece billets was profile defects, caused by
trapped air and process downtime associated with short piece handling. The Fusion Bond process
eliminates the tension between profile defects and optimum log utilization. With the rotary bonder,
the end of each log segment is joined to the front of the following log by friction welding. The
billets are cut from this “continuous” ingot and provided to the press. The handling issues
associated with two-piece billets are eliminated, and no air is trapped in the container at the log
