Tribological Investigation on CVD Coated Extrusion Dies

ABSTRACT—Dies for the extrusion of aluminum alloys are exposed to severe thermal and
mechanical conditions. Corrosion, erosive wear, and thermal fatigue are dominant failure
mechanisms. To extend their life, different surface modification and coating techniques are used,
such as nitriding and CVD coatings. Market trends for coated aluminum extrusion dies are highvolume
applications like multi-micro-port, precision round tube profiles, etc., improved profile
surface finish, and dies especially suitable for ``hard push alloys`` with higher alloy content of
silicon (Si), magnesium (Mg), zinc (Zn), or copper (Cu). To meet such requirements, a
tribological test method was developed together with ETH-Zürich in order to investigate the
friction and wear mechanisms between different coating layers and aluminum alloys. This paper
will discuss the advantages and applications of CVD coated extrusion dies. The results from the
tribological low-pressure test, as well as conclusions to wear phenomena and adhesion effects
will be presented. Furthermore, the correlation between recrystallization and adhesion was
investigated by means of the electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) method.
