Increased Productivity using CVD Coated Insert Tooling

ABSTRACT—Use of CVD (chemical vapor deposition) coated inserts in the aluminum
extrusion process has produced extraordinary results in many cases. Some of the benefits that
have been realized are: up to 10 times the die life, no weight per foot gain over the life of the
tool, no die rework or polishing required, extended hours in the press (up to 32 hours),
consistent surface finish, and increased ram speed of up to 18%. Actual results from
extruders will be demonstrated.
