ABSTRACT—Nitrogen based surface treatments and coatings such as generic chemical
vapor deposition (CVD) and physical vapor deposition (PVD) have been used to improve the
life of extrusion tools. A review of these processes indicating the advantages and
disadvantages of each are outlined, and a new process based on diffusion duplex surface
treatments is introduced, which offers the extruder the ability to either improve extrusion
speed and/or decrease wear on the surface of the tools. The new process can be incorporated
into existing tool rooms currently nitriding and has the ability to be reapplied over the life of
the extrusion tool subject to optimizing the reprocessing cycle.
