As we have reported, the Department of Commerce has been conducting a “Sec. 232 investigation” into the national security impacts of imports of aluminum. The deadline for the Commerce Department to submit its recommendation to the President is in mid-January.

The focus in Washington, D.C. has shifted to the prospect of quotas and/or tariffs being placed on primary aluminum products imported by the United States. As our industry’s trade association, we have been very vocal in our opposition to this idea. Instead, we have focused our remedy on China’s unrelenting build up and over-production of aluminum products. The Aluminum Extruders Council has proposed that any remedy should focus on imports of all aluminum-containing products from China, as that is the source of market distortions and overcapacity globally.
